As a new indie author and publisher, the self-publishing and marketing process can be overwhelming. Where do I start? What are others doing? Where can I go for some good advice?
There are many wonderful online resources for indie publishers. An endless number of blogs (like this one) are out there with people documenting their journeys into self-publishing. Some industrious authors, who have had some success, have even release “how to” guides on the subject. Today, however, I am going to talk about one of the best resources I have found. FREE Podcasts.
The FREE part is a big bonus for me. Like I said, there are a lot of great published guides to help indie authors like Let’s Get Digital by David Gaughran or How To Market a Book by Joanna Penn. Great affordable resources for the amount of info they offer. However, I was looking for something with a FREE price point to start.
A quick search on my phone led me to a library of self-publishing related pod casts that were all free and packed full of information. In addition, listening to these podcasts on a regular basis helped me to really get plugged in to the indie publishing world. Not only do you get regular tips and tricks on marketing and publicity, but you learn who the successful people in the industry are and how they work. I am personally an audiobook lover and this was a natural fit for my commute. If the podcast isn’t a convenient format for you, most of the hosts have websites and blogs with great information in them as well. Here are a few of my favorites that I have found most useful.
Simon Whistler hosts the Rocking Self-Publishing Podcast. It features interviews with industry leading authors who have found success in the indie publishing world. The website also features a blog and a list of resources for indie authors
Author Joanna Penn hosts The Creative Penn Podcast. Joanna is a successfully published indie author with a wealth of knowledge in the field and some great resources to help you write publish and market your book
Jim Kukral and Bryan Cohen host the Sell More Books Show. This show focuses a bit more on the marketing and publishing side of the industry. Every episode has some great tips and news stories about the industry. Bryan Cohen is a speaker and freelance writer who has written over 30 books and Jim Kukral is an 18-year internet marketing professional and founder of AuthorMarketingClub.com
All of these show are filled with wonderful insights, and they are just a few of the countless podcasts available. Check them out, discover which ones work best for you, and let us know what you find. As always we love any feedback. Good luck and happy listening.
